Business Profile basics

How Google Business Profiles connect a business to local searches

Answer in brief

A Google Business Profile describes a real business in Search and Maps. Start with accurate business information. Categories describe what the business is; service areas describe where it works. Neither replaces a useful website or guarantees visibility.

A profile and a website do different jobs

A profile helps someone inspect practical business details: what you do, when you operate and how to contact you. A website can explain a service in more depth, show relevant work and answer questions before someone calls. A wrong number in either place can break that journey.

Start your review by opening the public profile and its website link. Follow the route as a customer would. Does the destination describe the same business and service? Can someone find a working contact route without returning to search?

Check whether the business qualifies

Google’s eligibility rules generally require in-person customer contact at a location or through visits to customers. An online-only business does not qualify simply because it wants local customers.

Use the real business name. Do not add service keywords or city names that are absent from that name. A service-area business that does not receive customers at its address should hide the address. Creating profiles for places where no qualifying business operates is not a substitute for serving a wider area.

Choose information from business records

Worked example · illustrative, not a client result

Imagine a company that repairs garage doors but does not sell loose parts. Its website emphasizes repair appointments, while the profile describes a parts shop. That mismatch gives customers the wrong expectation before the first call.

HoursThe hours customers can receive the stated serviceCorrect outdated hours and add applicable special hours.
Phone and websiteA tested business contact routeReplace a disconnected number or obsolete destination.
ServicesWork the team actually acceptsRemove obsolete services; explain current work clearly.

Write the current value and the intended correction before editing. This gives the business owner something specific to verify. Do not replace a valid detail merely because a competitor uses different wording.

Understand the limits of a profile edit

Google describes local results through relevance, distance and prominence. See its local ranking explanation. An accurate category can help describe relevance; it cannot move the business closer to every searcher.

Adding a city to a service area tells people where you work. It does not create a staffed location there or guarantee results from that city. Likewise, a new photo is a content update, not proof of improved rankings.

Try a five-field audit

  1. Record the public name, category, hours, phone and website destination.
  2. Ask the business owner to compare each field with current operations.
  3. Test the phone and website routes without submitting a fake customer inquiry.
  4. Correct documented mismatches and record the date.
  5. Check the public result after the edit is processed.

The audit passes when those details accurately describe the business and the contact route works. Search exposure is a separate measurement. Continue with reading Search Console data for the website side of that measurement.
