How to read Search Console without confusing clicks with customers

Answer in brief

Read impressions, clicks and click-through rate together for a defined page, search type and period. Then examine relevant queries. Search Console describes search activity; it does not tell you whether a visitor became a suitable inquiry or a paying customer.

Start with one question and one page

“Did the repair page attract more relevant search visits after we clarified its service?” is a question you can investigate. “Is SEO working?” combines too many different questions for one chart.

In Search Console, open the Search results Performance report. Choose a search type and date range. Filter to the page you changed. Compare complete periods of equal length, and note holidays, seasonal changes or other releases that may affect the comparison. Equal periods improve the comparison; they do not remove these influences.

Calculate the numbers yourself

The Performance report includes impressions, clicks, click-through rate and average position. Click-through rate, or CTR, is clicks divided by impressions.

Worked example · illustrative, not a client result

MetricEarlier periodLater period
Impressions1,0002,000
Clicks2030
CTR20 ÷ 1,000 = 2%30 ÷ 2,000 = 1.5%

Clicks increased by 50%, while CTR fell by half a percentage point. The lower CTR alone does not establish that the page became worse. It may have appeared for additional searches that attracted fewer clicks. Inspect the query mix before proposing a title change.

Separate useful exposure from unrelated exposure

Look at the Queries tab for the filtered page. Group visible searches by the problem they describe. For a repair business, a repair appointment search and a job vacancy search represent different intentions, even when both mention the same trade.

Compare relevant groups across the two periods. Treat missing query rows carefully: the report does not expose every individual query. Do not force the visible rows to equal the headline totals. Google explains aggregation and reporting limits in its measurement definitions.

Average position also combines observations. It is not a fixed position that every customer sees. A change in which searches expose the page can change the average.

Keep the inquiry record separate

Use a simple chain: search click → website visit → contact action → accepted inquiry → qualified inquiry → booked work. A phone-link click cannot show whether a call connected. A form-service acceptance cannot show whether the request fits the business.

For inquiry review, record the date, service requested, source when known and the business’s qualification outcome. Keep personal customer details in the appropriate business system, not in public analytics events. Some sources will remain unknown; label them unknown instead of assigning them to SEO.

Write a conclusion the evidence supports

A useful review might read: “The page received ten more search clicks. Repair-related queries account for part of the increase. We cannot yet connect those clicks to additional qualified inquiries.” That statement identifies progress and the remaining measurement gap.

Keep a short change log containing the page, release date, reason for the change, comparison periods and observed result. Choose the next investigation from the missing link. No exposure calls for a different check than useful traffic with a broken form. For the first case, start with indexing diagnostics.
